For a short amount of time, they greatly increase the power and recharge rate of your weapons and shields respectively. The various powers have prerequisites.Īt the start of the game, Weapons Boost and Shield Boost are the most useful. You get 20 upgrades and there are 6 powers each with 5 levels each. Plasma Weapon upgrades follow the same pattern. For your last five upgrades, you can decide what order to take engines and wings, but I took the two wing levels first. Then hull to level 10 (5 turrets and +20% damage).

Then upgrade wings 4 more times (to get a total of 4 front weapons and +10% weapon damage). Wings are the next best (more forward weapons)įor the upgrade pattern, I would recommend taking a Wing upgrade first (for the second forward weapon), followed by 6 hull upgrades (to get 3 turrets and +10% turret damage). The downside is that you can’t turn them off, you can’t pick their target, and usually only one turret can target any particular ship at a time. Turrets rock because they shoot in all directions, shoot automatically, and usually are more accurate than you are. The hull upgrade is the most valuable by far. MISSABLE ACHIEVEMENT WARNING!As noted, for achievements, you need to reach level 10 hull and level 7 wings. When you reach level 5 in a category, you get a 10% bonus and at level 10 you get a 20% bonus. Upgrading your engines increases the recharge rate on your weapons and shields. Upgrading your wings gives you more maneuverability and more front weapons. While prices go up quite rapidly, money also seems easy to come by and I rarely had to grind missions in order to afford things.įor your upgrades, upgrading your hull gives you more health and more turrets. If you don’t have enough cash, do random missions to make enough money. When you gain a new level, upgrade all of your equipment for the category (weapons, electronics, etc) to the next level. Regardless of which ship upgrade you pick, the level of your guns, electronics, and equipment also increases. When you gain a level, you can upgrade an aspect of your ship and upgrade a power of your plasma cannon. Your ship gains levels as you acquire artifacts, up to level 20. The Big Bang missiles are somewhat useful against large targets (like cruisers) but even then, you can usually deal with the escorts and just park yourself behind the engine (where their turrets can't hit you) and camp out and destroy it. They cost money and take up a weapon slot and most of them aren’t that good. They will always be the same kind of weapon favored by the species that controls the system where it is dropped. They are quite a bit better than normal weapons of the same level and usually slightly worse than weapons of the next level up. Secret Service weapons are special weapons obtained at a few plot points and also are sometimes the reward for eliminating a pirate gang or liberating a system. Spore: Same rate of fire as lasers, but more damage.Given that most ships move very quickly, a higher rate of fire is usually more useful than infrequently heavy hits. Graviton: Large damage and high energy use, but very slow rate of fire.I didn’t find them as useful as Railguns. Does more damage against shields but less against hull. Ion Cannon: Same rate of fire as lasers.

A little higher energy consumption, but that’s usually not a problem.
